A city that was for everyone before global cities were a thing: the main port to the otherwise landlocked Austria-Hungary, Trieste was Germanic, Slav, Italian, but also Eastern Orthodox and Jewish, for a long stretch of its existence, until Italy got hold of it after WW1 and against all odds kept it after WW2. We are meant to accept that its italianità is fundamental, defining, and has always been there.

A city where I found the most gorgeous Orthodox church anywhere:

Where, on seeing her face on two things within an hour, I thought, After she's gone, that's pretty much it for Can Lit?

Where bookstore display tables inevitably have “Between East and West” sections:
