“Traviata directed by Diane Arbus,” instantly brought to mind a heroin sick Violetta played by a female impersonator, but that would be more of a Peter Sellars thing, wouldn’t it.

Also: Purcell?! Yay! I’ll be there.

Lol true. Although... Sellars has had a religious turn, I think he's gone Buddhist-Christian so Regie impulses have weakened. Wonder what he's been up to lately.

Iconography is such second nature to artists, I’m never surprised when I hear about one’s connection to religion. Just… how do they use that? I’m curious about Sellars, now.

This was a long-touring production for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaZ3AN4JEk0 He stages a lot of oratorios and did a Matthew Passion with BerlinPhil. None of these images are inviting to me - too much cult-like behaviour on stage etc - but I've been wrong before.
