Great piece, Lydia, so much I could relate to, because I think about the British obsession with property, NIMBYism and the flats and houses I’ve lived in A LOT. The situation in practically every city in England (and a city can be as small as Salisbury, population only 40K) but also every town and every village, is that described by Jen Gerson. Massive generational divide, the same population density in the South as in parts of China and highest prices in the world. I cannot do what Alex Kashuta has done, even though we could buy a massive mansion in the forest with a plot of land in Poland for the money we’d get if we sold our tiny, bog-standard newbuild in Wiltshire. My brother just bought a large house in the sticks in Poland, the kind of purchase that only a millionaire can afford in England. He and his partner are, needless to say, NOT millionaires, just people with normal jobs, and didn’t even get much help from their parents. Anyway, I could rant for England about this country’s bonkers situation, the greed, the gerontocracy which means things are not going to change, but anyway, how can they, when Labour MPs are landlords, and former Labour PM has a „property portfolio” worth millions. Can’t wait for your book, but its delivery has been delayed.
I'd like you to speak as a presenter 15 -20 minutes for the KEI Network's Zoomed webinar "LEADERSHIP - options for restoring order in the face of relentless chaos: - 4pm MDT May 19th along with Peter Stockland and Doug Firby. Interested? Reply to Perry Kinkaide Editor@KEInetwork.net
I’m going to have to ask you to stop writing pieces aimed so directly at me. This time as the “I’ve got mine but just barely,” new condo owner outside a different, somewhat global city. Which is to say, really lovely piece. And I look forward to getting my hands on the new book.
Reading your new book "Lost in Canada" Chapter on lost Canadian culture is right on, wonderful, and thank you. As a older citizen I've long critized american influence here. We lost Canada's unique identity when Brian Mulroney signed the first free trade agreement. I've also found your section on Montenegre. Have you heard of Micheal Parenti? He wrote a good book on "To Kill a Nation" about the breakup of Yugoslavia. Worth a read. Love your writing and look forward to more. David Gleeson, a vecchio saggio!
By Jove, I have the best readers

It's like.. we'll all be edged out across the border, in search of a place to live. It's wild.
we may go back there
to the country of our defeat
Wollaston Elzevir and Dungannon
and Weslemkoon lake land
where the high townships of Cashel
McClure and Marmora once were –
But it’s been a long time since
and we must enquire the way
of strangers –
